Greenville, South Carolina — The investigation into the d3ath of actress Hayden Panettiere has taken a significant new turn, with law-enforcement sources saying investigators believe a single pill she took on the morning of her d3ath may have contained oxycodone mixed with fentanyl.
Panettiere, the 36-year-old actress known worldwide for her roles in “Heroes,” “Nashville” and the “Scream” franchise, was found unresponsive in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16, 2026, just days before what would have been her 37th birthday.
Her official cause of d3ath, however, has not yet been determined.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office continues to await toxicology results, meaning reports connecting her d3ath to fentanyl currently represent an investigative theory based on information from law-enforcement sources rather than a finalized medical determination.
An autopsy reportedly found no evidence of physical trauma contributing to her d3ath, and authorities have not publicly indicated that foul play was involved.
Investigators believe one pill may have been f4tal
According to multiple law-enforcement sources cited in recent reports, Panettiere is believed to have taken what she thought was an oxycodone pill on the morning she d1ed.
Investigators suspect the pill also contained fentanyl.
The information has not yet been confirmed through publicly released toxicology findings.
Authorities are consequently trying to determine exactly what substances were in Panettiere’s system and, if an illicit pill contributed to her d3ath, where it originated.
The investigation now stretches across South Carolina and Los Angeles, California.
DEA reportedly examining an alleged longtime dealer
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has become involved as investigators attempt to trace the origin of the substances Panettiere may have obtained before traveling to South Carolina.
Sources familiar with the investigation told TMZ that Panettiere allegedly had a longtime dealer in Los Angeles who supplied her with black-market prescription medications, including oxycodone.
The alleged dealer has not been publicly identified, and no finding of criminal responsibility has been announced.
The newest development, reported Tuesday, September 15, is that federal investigators are examining numerous text conversations allegedly exchanged between Panettiere and the individual over a period of years.
Some of those communications reportedly continued until shortly before her d3ath.
Investigators are examining the messages to determine whether they can establish what Panettiere purchased, when she obtained it and whether the suspected f4tal pill can ultimately be traced to a particular source.
Brian Hickerson has spoken with federal investigators
Another name involved in the investigation is Brian Hickerson, Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend.
Hickerson was in South Carolina when Panettiere d1ed and has since spoken with DEA investigators.
He has not been identified as a suspect or charged in connection with her d3ath.
His brother, Zach Hickerson, was also present at the South Carolina residence.
According to accounts contained in police records and subsequent reporting, Panettiere was discovered unresponsive and emergency assistance was requested.
Efforts were made to revive her before emergency personnel ultimately pronounced her d3ad.
Investigators also learned that Panettiere had multiple medications with her, although portions of the police report identifying those substances were redacted.
Official toxicology results remain the missing piece
Despite headlines saying Panettiere d1ed from a fentanyl-laced oxycodone pill, authorities have not formally released that conclusion.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office confirmed Tuesday that her cause and manner of d3ath remain pending while investigators wait for toxicology testing.
Those results are particularly important because they could establish what substances were present in her body and potentially determine whether fentanyl played the role investigators currently suspect.
Until those findings are completed, the suspected fentanyl-laced pill should not be described as Panettiere’s officially established cause of d3ath.
Panettiere had publicly discussed her struggle with addiction
Long before her d3ath, Panettiere had spoken candidly about her struggles with alcohol and opioids.
She revisited those experiences in her 2026 memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” discussing the pressures of growing up in the entertainment industry, addiction, relationships, motherhood and postpartum depression.
Panettiere previously said she was only 15 when someone working around her gave her what she described as “happy pills” before public appearances.
As she became older, she said alcohol and drugs increasingly affected her life.
