St. Paul, Minnesota.— A Minnesota mother is being remembered for an extraordinary final act of love after she escaped a burning duplex, realized her young daughter was still trapped inside, and made the decision to go back into the flames to find her.
Bonnie Pierce, 38, later d13d from the severe injur13s she sustained in the f1r3. Her 4-year-old daughter, Grace, survived and remains hospitalized, with her family expressing hope that she will make a full recovery.
The f1r3 broke out at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at a duplex in the 700 block of Magnolia Avenue East in St. Paul.
According to the St. Paul Fire Department, emergency crews arrived to find an active structure f1r3.
Bonnie was home at the time with two of her daughters, Aurora and Grace.
As conditions inside the residence became increasingly dangerous, Aurora managed to escape through a window by kicking out an air-conditioning unit and climbing through the opening.
Bonnie also initially made it safely outside.
But once she realized that Grace had not escaped with them, the mother turned around and went back into the burning duplex.
Family members said Bonnie entered the home before rescuers could reach the little girl.
When firefighters eventually made their way inside, they discovered Bonnie and Grace together.
Bonnie was unresponsive and was reportedly positioned over her daughter, using her own body to shield Grace from the f1r3, intense heat and smoke.
First responders immediately began performing CPR on the 38-year-old mother.
Information released by her family indicates Bonnie had been without oxygen for approximately 15 minutes and suffered b8rns covering about 48% of her body.
She was rushed to a hospital in extremely serious condition as doctors attempted to save her.
Despite those efforts, Bonnie Pierce d13d on Monday, August 24, two days after the f1r3.
Grace survived.
The latest family information says the 4-year-old remains hospitalized while recovering from her injur13s. Relatives have said they are hopeful she will ultimately make a full recovery.
Bonnie was the mother of four daughters: Alaynah, Aurora, Jemma and Grace.
She was also the grandmother of a boy named Atlas.
Following the tr4g3dy, Jessica Buol organized a fundraising campaign on behalf of Daniel Pierce to assist the family.
Money raised is intended to help cover Bonnie’s funeral expenses, Grace’s continuing medical treatment and recovery, immediate living expenses and other costs faced by her surviving family.
The story has attracted widespread attention because Bonnie had already reached safety before voluntarily returning to the duplex.
Her family describes what happened afterward as the ultimate sacrifice of a mother determined not to leave her daughter behind.
Authorities, meanwhile, continue investigating what started the f1r3.
