LOS ANGELES — Katherine Hartley Short, the eldest daughter of actor and comedian Martin Short and the late actress Nancy Dolman, has died at the age of 42, authorities confirmed this week.
According to law enforcement officials, officers with the Los Angeles Police Department and members of the Los Angeles Fire Department responded Monday evening to a residence in the Hollywood Hills shortly after 6:40 p.m. Pacific Time. Katherine Hartley Short was found deceased at the scene. Authorities indicated that her death resulted from a self-inflicted gnsht w*und. The investigation remains ongoing, though officials have not indicated any signs of foul play.
In a statement released through a family representative, the Short family said: “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
Katherine Hartley Short was the daughter of Martin Short and Nancy Dolman, who were married for 30 years until Dolman’s death in 2010 from ovarian cancer. She was the eldest of the couple’s three children.
Professionally, Katherine worked as a social worker in Los Angeles. She earned her bachelor’s degree from New York University and later obtained a master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern California. She was also involved with the nonprofit organization Bring Change To Mind, which focuses on reducing stigma surrounding mental health conditions and encouraging open dialogue and support.
While Martin Short is widely known for his decades-long career in comedy and film, Katherine Hartley Short largely remained out of the public spotlight, making occasional appearances at events with her father over the years.
Martin Short, who has been touring with fellow comedian Steve Martin, had scheduled performances in Milwaukee and Minneapolis later this week. As of publication, it remains unclear whether those shows will proceed.
The death marks another personal loss for Martin Short, who recently mourned the passing of his longtime colleague and friend Catherine O’Hara.
